I’m not much of a sciency person, but I got my physicist brother to explain it to me in laymans terms.

It’s a huge electro-magnet basically, and it moves two particals in opposite directions at 99% of light speed round in a circle. When the boffins think it’s going fast enough they change the angle slightly and the two particals collide, giving off huge amounts of energy and splitting the particals all over the place.

What the scientists are hoping to find is the Higgs-boson partical, which carries the higgs field. As a massless partical travels through the higgs field it gains the Higgs-boson, the mass, and therefor gravity. Finding the hypothetical Higgs-boson would prove the link between mass and matter.

Further to this, some people think the Hadron Collider will create tiny black holes, which will destroy the earth and be the demise of us all. It is however, perfectly safe. Whatever happens when the two particals collide happens all the time in the atmosphere every day.

I think that’s more or less right. I’ve never been so excited about physics. Here’s some links to related stuff.
